Sleep may be the closest thing there is. The old saying “I need my beauty sleep”  isn’t a myth. Science tells us that good sleep is essential for repairing, regenerating and restructuring the skin. Your body repairs itself and recovers while you sleep. Getting 7 to 9 quality hours of sleep every night can have a profound impact on your skin.

How?

Your skin makes new collagen when you sleep, more collagen means skin is plumper and less likely to wrinkle.

Your body also boosts blood flow to the skin while you snooze, which means you wake to a healthy glow.

One of the first things we see when we don’t sleep is dark circles. Lack of sleep makes your blood vessel dilate leading to dark circles.  You will also find that not sleeping enough can result in poor water balance that creates dark circles and puffy eyes.

When you are tired the blood in your body is not flowing efficiently which normally results in a lack of oxygen in the blood. This lack of oxygen causes your skin to appear ashy, pigmented, or blotchy.

How To Get The Best Sleep:

Your bedroom is your sanctuary from the stresses of the day. It should make you feel relaxed and peaceful.

Have a regular routine, go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time each day.

The majority of adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night to feel their best.

Sleeping in a cool room, somewhere around 65 degrees, makes for the best sleep.

If you have difficulty falling asleep. You might want to try an aromatherapy blend in a diffuser in your bedroom to help you relax. Diffusers are also a great room humidifier.

Make your room completely dark while you sleep.

Consider low-wattage, incandescent lamps at your bedside to help you wind down in the hours before sleep. Survey your room for any other sources of artificial light, for example, streetlamps or porch lights, or even the glow from the power buttons of electronics like TV’s or bright alarm clocks.

In your bedroom, white noise can be created by a fan or air purifier, anything that is a consistent and soothing backdrop throughout the night, helping mask activity from inside and outside the house.

As for your skin.  Like the rest of the body, skin does the bulk of its repairing, restoring, and regenerating while we sleep, so night creams are focused on moisture and recovery. They contain the most powerful, slow-absorbing moisturizers that are designed to penetrate over the course of several hours.

Wash your face apply your nighttime skin care and snooze away. You’ll wake up refreshed and ready to face the day!
